Loneliness has become a secret epidemic with serious health consequences, comparable to chain smoking and binge drinking. US surgeon general Vivek Murthy emphasizes the negative effects of loneliness on health and longevity. Loneliness differs from social isolation, as it is a subjective feeling of inadequate social relationships.

Loneliness increases a U-shaped curve with age, being highest among adolescents and young adults. Loneliness has been associated to an increased risk of a variety of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and cancer, according to research. Loneliness increases physiological stress, inflammation, and has a poor psychological impact.

The link between loneliness and health issues suggests the need to address and counter loneliness to increase overall well-being. Initiatives like greeting neighbors, joining local interest groups, volunteering, and reducing reliance on social media can help combat loneliness. The Campaign to End Loneliness estimates that the number of lonely people aged over 50 in the UK will reach 2 million by 2026. While loneliness cannot be eradicated completely, small acts of kindness can contribute to reducing the stigma and effects of loneliness.
